The Rec2 $5K Buzz Challenge

Indie films wage an ongoing war with major releases for awareness and promotion in a cluttered market space. It’s a war independent films are losing. Some cool films deserve to be seen in cinemas with an audience of fans. Films like REC2, the terrifying sequel to the horror hit REC.

REC2 will be released in a few New Zealand theatres on Black Friday (13 Nov), and I’m helping the distributor – Vendetta Films – to get the word out. The catch? They only have a few thousand to market it.

So I pitched Vendetta to let me give away 75% (Five Thousand Dollars Cash) to any individual(s) who promote (Buzz) the movie REC2 in the boldest and most innovative fashion. They said yes.

To be in to win the $5k all you need to do is use the untapped power of your mind. How’s that for a recession buster? For more information, read here and here.

YEAH RIGHT

my idea involves getting the tuis billboards across the land to read on one side ‘starts Nov. 17th the scariest film yet’ and on the other other side (where it normally says ‘Yeah. Right!’ ) it will read ‘Yeah. REC2’ written in blood red! then this will start a buzz until the film starts!

JUDGES COMMENT : Apart from getting the date wrong - its November 13th as in Friday 13th. The contest is about actually doing something. Like making it real. Not just having an idea. Here’s an idea. How about reading the rules!

Scare-a

My idea involved a promotional event that would get media attention if you tip them off!

Contact performing arts students and make up students, ask if they want to be part of a promotional event, in return they would get a reference on their cv and a double movie pass.

On Halloween (Oct 30) or following week if too short notice) They need to dress as Zombies ( with rec2 logo some where on costume) and congregate at a pre determined area in the CBD of Akl, Wtgn, Chch, Dun. Zombies can travel by bus, train and even groups on a boat, open it up to the public too and offer a prize of $500  and movie passes for entering and coming in costume. You ay even want a few not dressed up people yelling Zombies are coming.Post it on competition type websites that get lots of traffic and you might get more interested participants. Id decorate my car and grab a few friends and drive around making Zombie noises

Media ( tv, local papers) will capture the Zombies invading (because you let them know!). So you could get wide spread exposure for the movie. Public will see them coming into town by their different modes of transport and take a second look.

Once again we need to remind everyone that just talking about something is as useful as a zombie with an allergy to brains. Talk is cheap. Please read the rules everyone, there is no cash for just having an idea. You actually need to do it !

The design might be simple but the ability to promote the film to thousands of New Zealanders is priceless.

This competion is about who can promote the film the best.

This year I will be attending the Armageddon Expo as a guest to promote my own feature film [ COMPOUND ]. Its a horror film which was fully funded by myself. At my stall I will have three people dressed as zombies handing out this flyer to the thousands of New Zealanders who attend the expo.

I will be doing this over a three day period and my stall is right beside the main attraction of the expo which is the PS3 stand. The their stand is where they reveal their new games for the coming year. People who attend this expo are already movie, games and comic fans so they will know about the first film. There will also be people attending the expo who are not.

I feel with just the basic information on this flyer, it will provide them with everything you need to know (the title of the film, the website and the release date) to find out more information for themself.

I’m hoping this strategy works and brings the biggest and best publicity for this film as I am a huge fan of the first film. The first film is an inspiration to me as an Independent film maker knowing a film with such little budget can do so well. I also understand that it’s all about word of mouth that will make a small independent film a huge success and turn it into a cult classic. I know this as I struggle to get the word of mouth out about my film every day so every little bit helps with publicity.

Judges Comment : We’re all this together approach. Dig it Dale. Best of luck with your feature film and fingers crossed you sign up some Armageddon recruits for REC2!
